The £20-million expansion of The Queen’s Gallery was the most significant addition to Buckingham Palace in 150 years. The Queen’s Gallery was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in May 2002, as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. It hosts a programme of changing exhibitions from the Royal Collection. Current exhibitions available to see are:

The first exhibition to focus on images of artists from within the Royal Collection, Portrait of the Artist not only showcases self-portraits by world-renowned artists including Rembrandt, Rubens, Artemisia Gentileschi, Lucian Freud and David Hockney but also features images of artists by their friends, relatives and pupils, including the most reliable surviving likeness of Leonardo da Vinci by his student, Francesco Melzi. Well-known self-portraits intended to advertise the artist's talents are shown alongside more intimate and personal works.

The exhibition examines a range of themes played out within these objects, from the 'cult' of the artist to the symbolism evoked through images of the artist’s studio. The changing status of the artist over the centuries is another theme and the way in which this is conveyed, both in the physical works and in the relationships between artist and patron is highlighted. The role of monarchs in commissioning, collecting and displaying portraits of artists is discussed.

Portrait of the Artist contains over 300 objects, including paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and decorative arts ranging in date from the 15th to the 21st century.

Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing (24 May - 13 October 2019)

Visit the largest Leonardo da Vinci exhibition in over 65 years as The Queen's Gallery brings together over 200 of his drawings to mark the 500th anniversary of his death.

Opening Dates: Open year round excluding 25-26 December each year and 13 November – 7 December 2017. The opening arrangements for Official Residences may change at short notice, please ensure you check the Royal Collection Trust website for the latest closed dates before your visit.

Opening Times: Open daily, 10:00-17:30 (last admission 16:15). During Buckingham Palace Summer Opening (21 July - 30 September 2018), open daily 9:30-17:30 (last admission 16:15). Early Closure on 24 December closing at 16:00 (last admission 14:45). If you are visiting the exhibition late in the afternoon, please be aware of shorter viewing times.
